The 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment for Iran, but the team’s campaign will be remembered as much for the challenges they faced off the pitch as their resilience on it.

Amid heightened political tensions between Iran and the United States, where all of their group-stage matches were scheduled, Iran arrived at the tournament under extraordinary circumstances. Questions over their participation persisted until shortly before kickoff, while logistical and travel restrictions overshadowed their campaign from the outset.

Despite those obstacles, Iran remained unbeaten in Group G, drawing all three matches and staying in contention for a place in the Round of 32 until the final moments of the group stage.

Political and logistical hurdles

Iran opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles, but the squad was immediately instructed to leave the United States and return to their temporary base in Tijuana, Mexico, rather than remain overnight for recovery.

Captain Mehdi Taremi and team officials criticised the arrangement, saying the players had been denied adequate recovery time between matches.

Visa restrictions also limited the travel of several federation officials, media representatives and administrative staff, reducing the team’s support structure throughout the tournament.

Iran had originally planned to base themselves in Tucson, Arizona, but abandoned those plans because of political uncertainty and immigration concerns. Instead, the team operated out of Tijuana, forcing players and staff to make lengthy cross-border journeys before each of their three matches in the United States.

The team’s frustration extended beyond travel. During post-match press conferences, FIFA officials repeatedly intervened when Taremi and midfielder Mohammad Mohebi attempted to answer questions about Iran’s treatment during the tournament and the political challenges surrounding their participation.

Qualification slips away

Iran’s final group match against Egypt developed into a dramatic battle for qualification.

Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt a fifth-minute lead, temporarily dropping Iran out of the qualification places before Ramin Rezaeian equalised with a superb finish from a tight angle in the 14th minute.

With the score level at 1-1, Iran needed a victory to guarantee progression.

Deep into stoppage time, Shojae Khalilzadeh appeared to score the winner, triggering jubilant celebrations on the Iranian bench. However, a VAR review ruled the defender narrowly offside, and the goal was disallowed.

Even after the final whistle, Iran’s hopes remained alive as they awaited the outcome of the Group J match between Algeria and Austria.

Algeria struck a stoppage-time goal to take a 3-2 lead, a result that would have sent Iran into the knockout stage.

But Austria equalised with virtually the final kick of the match to secure a 3-3 draw, denying Iran qualification in heartbreaking fashion.

Unbeaten but eliminated, Iran’s World Cup campaign ended in dramatic fashion, closing a tournament defined by resilience, adversity and heartbreak both on and off the pitch.
