The 2026 FIFA World Cup has become the fastest edition of the tournament in 68 years to reach 100 goals, with the milestone achieved after just 33 matches as attacking football continues to dominate the expanded competition in North America.
The century mark was reached when Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo scored in his side’s 5-1 Group F victory over Sweden, becoming the player credited with the tournament’s 100th goal.
The achievement comes only 33 matches into the competition, surpassing the pace set by the 1982 and 2014 World Cups, which both required 36 matches to reach 100 goals. The 1978 and 1994 tournaments took 38 games, while the overall record remains the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where the 100-goal barrier was crossed after only 20 matches.
Scoring in the tournament began when Mexico’s Julian Quinones found the net in a 2-0 victory over South Africa on June 12.
The Netherlands also reached a landmark of their own during the win over Sweden, becoming only the eighth nation in World Cup history to score 100 goals in the competition.
Brian Brobbey put the Dutch ahead inside five minutes before adding a second in the 17th minute, a strike that marked the Netherlands’ 100th World Cup goal.
The tournament reached another significant milestone on Saturday when Japan’s 4-0 victory over Tunisia in Monterrey became the 1,000th match in World Cup history.
“Match 1,000 symbolises longevity and humanity’s enduring love for football and the FIFA World Cup,” FIFA said in a statement.
“But it also is a testament to football’s unique knack for breaking through barriers and galvanising communities and nations to come together.”
The 2026 tournament is the first World Cup to feature 48 teams, with the expanded field divided into 12 groups. The top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed sides, will advance to the knockout stage.
With goals flowing at one of the fastest rates in modern World Cup history, the tournament has already produced several high-scoring encounters and is on course to challenge long-standing scoring records.
