LONDON : England cricket captain Ben Stokes is reportedly considering his future as skipper following his involvement in a nightclub incident that has triggered an investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
The ECB said on Monday that Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were under investigation over an incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday following England’s victory over New Zealand national cricket team in the first test at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Details of the incident have not been disclosed.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Stokes is expected to meet with his advisers on Wednesday to discuss his future as England captain.
The 34-year-old all-rounder was previously involved in a high-profile incident outside a nightclub in Bristol in 2017, which led to an affray charge. Stokes missed England’s 2017-18 Ashes tour before being cleared the following year.
England’s squad has faced increased scrutiny over player behaviour in recent years. Following a 4-1 Ashes series defeat earlier this year, ECB chief executive Richard Gould announced stricter disciplinary measures, including a midnight curfew for players.
England are due to face New Zealand in the second test of the three-match series beginning on June 17 at The Oval.
