Can Germany reclaim their place among football’s elite?

DOHA: More than a decade after lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy in Brazil, Germany are still searching for a return to football’s summit.

The memories of Mario Götze’s extra-time winner against Argentina in the 2014 final remain cherished by fans, but the years that followed have been marked by disappointment rather than dominance.

Back-to-back group-stage exits at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups exposed the decline of a nation once regarded as one of the most consistent forces in international football. However, the arrival of Julian Nagelsmann has sparked renewed optimism.

Germany’s run to the semi-finals of Euro 2024 showed encouraging signs, with their campaign ending in controversial fashion against eventual champions Spain.

As Germany look ahead to the next chapter, Nagelsmann has assembled a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents. Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer remains part of the squad, while captain Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rudiger, Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz form the backbone of a team eager to restore Germany’s reputation on the global stage.

The squad also features promising young players such as Aleksandar Pavlovic, Nick Woltemade and Lennart Karl, highlighting the country’s ongoing commitment to youth development.

With a new generation emerging and confidence gradually returning, Germany now face a crucial period. The question is whether Nagelsmann’s project can transform promise into silverware and lead Die Mannschaft back to the pinnacle of world football.
