CAIRO : Mohamed Salah will lead Egypt’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America, coach Hossam Hassan announced on Saturday, with teenage striker Hamza Abdel Karim earning a surprise call-up.
The 18-year-old forward, currently on loan from Al Ahly SC to FC Barcelona Atlètic, was the most notable inclusion in an otherwise expected squad.
Egypt will also rely heavily on Omar Marmoush, who plays for Manchester City and is expected to spearhead the team’s attack during the tournament.
The Egyptians begin their World Cup campaign against Belgium national football team in Seattle on June 15 in Group G, which also includes New Zealand national football team and Iran national football team.
Before travelling to the tournament, Egypt will face Brazil national football team in a friendly match in Ohio on June 6.
The squad features experienced names including goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy, defender Mohamed Abdelmonem and midfielder Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet alongside Salah and Marmoush as Egypt seek to make an impact on the world stage.
