PARIS :Russian eighth seed Daniil Medvedev suffered a shock first-round exit at the French Open on Tuesday after losing 2-6 6-1 1-6 6-1 6-4 to Australian wildcard Adam Walton.
Medvedev struggled to find consistency throughout the match as Walton, ranked 97th in the world, claimed the biggest win of his career and his first victory over a top-10 opponent.
The Australian will face American Zachary Svajda in the second round after Svajda defeated fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin 3-6 6-3 7-6 7-5.
French teenager Moise Kouame also impressed on his Grand Slam debut, beating former U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic 7-6 6-2 6-1 to delight the home crowd at Roland Garros.
The 17-year-old will next face Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, who advanced after Britain’s Cameron Norrie retired injured.
Elsewhere, Portugal’s Jaime Faria defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov in straight sets, while Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff beat Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in four sets.
American Learner Tien also advanced with a 6-0 2-6 6-0 6-2 win over Chile’s Cristian Garin.
