Austin, TX, USA : Reigning MotoGP champion Marc Marquez is set to return for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix after undergoing two surgeries following a crash at Le Mans, his team Ducati said on Tuesday.
The Spaniard missed both the French Grand Prix race and the Catalan Grand Prix weekend after fracturing his foot in a heavy highside crash during the sprint race at Le Mans earlier this month.
Marquez underwent surgery on a metatarsal fracture and also had a separate shoulder operation that had originally been planned for after his home race in Catalonia.
“Following a positive medical check, Marc will travel to Mugello tomorrow,” Ducati said in a statement.
“He is scheduled for a final trackside assessment on Thursday to secure the ‘fit to race’ clearance for the Italian Grand Prix.”
Meanwhile, Ducati test rider Michele Pirro will replace Alex Marquez at Gresini Racing after the Spaniard suffered serious injuries in a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix.
Alex Marquez will miss races in Italy and Hungary after sustaining a vertebra fracture near his neck along with a broken right collarbone.
