Qatar extend lead in GCC Games swimming with record-breaking haul

DOHA :  Qatar tightened their grip on the swimming competition at the 4th GCC Games Doha 2026 after winning multiple gold medals and setting a series of Gulf records on Thursday at the Hamad Aquatic Center.

HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, president of the Olympic Council of Asia and the Qatar Olympic Committee, crowned the winners during the third day of competition.

Qatar claimed gold in the men’s 4×200 metres freestyle relay in a Gulf record time of 7:29.22, with Kuwait taking silver and Saudi Arabia bronze.

Saad Al Din Sami continued his strong performances by winning the men’s 200m freestyle gold in another Gulf record time of 1:49.59. Fellow Qatari Ali Tamer secured silver, while Kuwait’s Saud Al Shamroukh finished third.

Mohammed Mahmoud added another gold for the hosts in the men’s 100m breaststroke with a Gulf record of 1:03.10, ahead of Bahrain’s Saud Ghali and Saudi Arabia’s Imad Zain.

Bahrain’s Robert Ponsal captured gold in the men’s 400m individual medley, with Qatar’s Emil Fawzi taking silver.

In the men’s 50m butterfly, Bahrain’s Mikhail Arkhangelskiy won gold while Qatar’s Tamim Al Humaidah secured silver.

After three days of competition, Qatar lead the swimming standings with 18 medals overall, including 11 gold, six silver and one bronze.
