DOHA : Qatar made a strong start to the swimming competition at the Gulf Games Doha 2026, winning five medals, including three golds, on the opening day.
Saad Al Din Sami claimed gold in the 800 metres freestyle after setting a new Gulf record with a time of 7:57.54.
Mohamed Mahmoud added another gold and Gulf record in the 200m individual medley, touching the wall in 2:03.02.
The third gold medal came through Emil Fawzi, who won the 200m butterfly in another record-breaking performance.
Qatar also collected two silver medals, with Ali Tamer finishing second in the 50m freestyle and Abdullah Al Ghamdi taking silver in the 100m backstroke.
Qatar Swimming Association president Mubarak Ali Al Nuaimi praised the team’s performance and said the results reflected the swimmers’ intensive preparation.
He also expressed hope that Qatar’s athletes would continue their medal-winning form during the remainder of the competition.
