Tehran, Iran : Iran national football team have suffered a major setback ahead of the tournament after winger Ali Gholizadeh was ruled out with a serious knee injury.
The 28-year-old sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear while playing for Lech Poznań against Motor Lublin. He is set to undergo surgery followed by several months of rehabilitation, ending his World Cup hopes.
Preparation Challenges
Despite uncertainty surrounding Iran’s participation due to geopolitical tensions, players have continued training camps in Tehran. Domestic football activities remain suspended, limiting preparation to internal matches and drills.
Azmoun Situation Adds Concern
There is also uncertainty around striker Sardar Azmoun, who has reportedly been left out of recent squads. The forward—currently playing for Shabab Al-Ahli—has been involved in off-field controversy, though reports suggest mediation efforts are ongoing.
World Cup Outlook
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran are expected to participate as scheduled.
Team Melli are set to begin their campaign against New Zealand national football team on June 15 in Los Angeles, followed by matches against Belgium national football team and Egypt national football team.
The loss of Gholizadeh is a significant blow, especially given his role on the wing, leaving Iran with both on-field and off-field challenges heading into the tournament.
