LOS ANGELES : Christian Pulisic believes the current United States men’s national soccer team is the strongest he has been part of, citing squad depth and players thriving at top clubs as reasons for optimism ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The AC Milan forward said the team is in a good place as it prepares for a tournament that will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
“I think you could say so,” Pulisic told Reuters when asked if this was the best U.S. team he has experienced. “Looking at the guys playing at the highest levels and doing extremely well at their clubs, you have a really strong squad and depth.
“Multiple guys can play in every position. It’s a very strong team.”
Under coach Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. are expected to feature players including Folarin Balogun, Tim Weah, Weston McKennie, Tyler Adams, Tim Ream and Chris Richards.
Pulisic said playing a World Cup at home adds extra motivation.
“A World Cup is enough motivation in itself and having it in the U.S., with my family and close friends there, there’s nothing more you can ask for,” he said.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
The 27-year-old said he expects strong support from fans, with the U.S. set to face Paraguay national football team on June 12 at SoFi Stadium.
“I know the energy in the stadiums is going to be great,” he said. “We want to use that to push and make the American people proud.”
Pulisic, who debuted as a teenager, said representing his country still carries deep meaning.
“It’s something I’ve been doing since I was 17. I’m very proud to be an American and just want to give everything back.”
‘CAPTAIN AMERICA’
Often labelled “Captain America”, Pulisic said he ignores such attention and focuses on performance.
“I definitely tune it out,” he said. “I worry about what I can do to help the team win.”
He added that his leadership style has evolved into leading by example rather than words as the U.S. build toward 2026.
