Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France : Carlos Alcaraz is awaiting further test results on a wrist injury before deciding whether he can defend his French Open title next month, the world number two said.
The 22-year-old picked up the injury during the opening round of the Barcelona Open and subsequently withdrew, with scans revealing the problem was more serious than first thought. He also skipped the Madrid Open as a precaution.
“The next test will be crucial,” Alcaraz told TVE. “We are trying to do everything we can to make sure it goes well. I’m trying to be patient, we are just waiting a little bit.
“We have a few tests in the next few days and then we will see how the injury is and what the next steps will be.”
Alcaraz, a seven-times Grand Slam champion, recently lost the world number one ranking to Jannik Sinner after defeat in the Monte Carlo Masters final.
He was also named Sportsman of the Year at the Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday.
The French Open is scheduled to begin on May 24 in Paris.
