Eindhoven, Netherlands: PSV Eindhoven captain Jerdy Schouten will miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering a cruciate ligament injury that required surgery, the club confirmed on Sunday.
The Netherlands midfielder sustained the injury during PSV’s 4-3 win over FC Utrecht, twisting his knee in the second half before being stretchered off.
Medical examinations confirmed a serious ligament injury, which typically requires six to nine months of recovery, ruling him out of the global tournament.
“When it happened, I immediately felt something was wrong,” Schouten said. “You still hope it’s not too bad, but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. The blow is big right now, but I will move on quickly.”
The 29-year-old has made 40 appearances for PSV this season, including 28 league matches, playing a key role as the club push for a third consecutive title.
Since making his international debut in 2022, Schouten has earned 17 caps for Netherlands national football team, most recently featuring in a friendly against Ecuador national football team.
