NEW DELHI: Sameer Rizvi starred in the impact player’s role with a blistering 90 off 51 balls as Delhi Capitals secured a six-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League on Saturday.

After opting to field, Delhi restricted Mumbai to 162-6 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, where batting proved difficult on a slow surface.

Stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav led Mumbai’s scoring with 51, while Rohit Sharma added 35. However, with only four sixes in the innings, Mumbai struggled to accelerate.

Rizvi, in contrast, dominated the chase with seven sixes and seven fours, notching his second consecutive half-century and guiding Delhi home with 11 balls to spare. The knock handed Mumbai their first defeat of the season.

Delhi now sit top of the table, level on points with Punjab Kings but ahead on net run rate.

Earlier, Mukesh Kumar struck twice in the third over, dismissing Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma to leave Mumbai reeling at 18-2.

Mumbai crawled to 41-2 at the end of the powerplay, reflecting Delhi’s disciplined bowling. Rohit briefly countered with the first six of the match, but Axar Patel removed him just as he looked set to accelerate.

A late push from Suryakumar was cut short when he was trapped lbw by Lungi Ngidi, after Kuldeep Yadav had briefly conceded momentum.

Delhi’s chase mirrored Mumbai’s slow start at 42-2 in the powerplay before Pathum Nissanka (44) led a recovery. Although Mitchell Santner dismissed Nissanka, Rizvi took charge, smashing Corbin Bosch and Mayank Markande to seal a commanding victory.
