Southampton: Noah Thain became the first-ever injury substitute in English county cricket after replacing Tom Westley during Essex County Cricket Club’s match against Hampshire County Cricket Club in Southampton on Friday.
Westley, Essex’s captain, was forced off the field after breaking a finger while batting, prompting Thain’s historic substitution.
The move follows a new season-long trial introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board, which allows like-for-like injury replacements to fully participate in matches. The rule also applies to cases involving illness or significant personal circumstances, such as the birth of a child or serious family emergencies.
Previously, substitutes were only permitted to field. However, the change comes after encouragement from the International Cricket Council for member boards to test injury replacement rules in domestic competitions.
Similar trials have already been conducted in domestic first-class cricket in Australia, India and South Africa.
Under the new regulations, substitutions must be approved by the match referee, and once a player is replaced, they cannot return to the game. As a like-for-like replacement for specialist batter Westley, Thain is permitted to bat but not bowl in the match.
