Rijeka, Croatia : Strasbourg striker Joaquin Panichelli, the leading scorer in Ligue 1 this season, has suffered a right knee injury while training with Argentina ahead of their friendly against Mauritania, the national team said on Friday.
“Joaquin Panichelli suffered a trauma to his right knee today and will be evaluated tomorrow with additional tests,” Argentina said in a statement on X.
Local media reported the 23-year-old could have sustained a cruciate ligament injury, raising concerns over his availability for Argentina’s World Cup title defence in June and July.
Panichelli, who made his international debut in November, previously suffered a cruciate ligament tear in July 2023 that kept him sidelined for more than six months.
He has been in standout form this season, leading Ligue 1 with 16 goals and scoring seven times in his last nine appearances for Strasbourg in all competitions.
His performances have helped the French club reach the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.
