New Delhi : Shubman Gill says winning the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup is the ultimate goal for the India national cricket team after their heartbreak in the previous edition.
India’s unbeaten run in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup ended with a final defeat to Australia national cricket team in Ahmedabad.
The next 50-over World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October–November 2027, and Gill believes India will have another strong chance to claim the trophy.
“We felt like we were so close last time,” Gill said during an awards ceremony organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“To be able to get another crack at it in South Africa, it’s going to be a great opportunity for us. Winning a World Cup in any format for the country is the ultimate goal.”
India have enjoyed significant success since that 2023 defeat, winning back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles.
T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph sparked a winning momentum across Indian cricket.
“That one step was important, that taste was important for everyone to understand what it takes to win an ICC trophy,” he said.
“Now there is no looking back. If this wonderful thing has started, let’s try and collect as many trophies as possible.”
