DOHA: The proposed “Finalissima” between European champions Spain national football team and Copa America holders Argentina national football team in Doha has been thrown into doubt after Qatar suspended all domestic football competitions amid escalating regional tensions.
The match, scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium, was set to feature leading names including Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi.
In a statement on Sunday, the Qatar Football Association said it had postponed all tournaments, competitions and matches “effective from today and until further notice”, adding that new dates would be announced through official channels.
A final decision on the intercontinental fixture rests with UEFA and CONMEBOL, the governing bodies for Europe and South America.
The disruption has spread across the region. The Asian Football Confederation said it was delaying Champions League Elite fixtures, while matches in the Asian Champions League Two and the Challenge League have also been affected.
Beyond football, Euroleague Basketball cancelled its NextGen qualifying tournament in Abu Dhabi, citing safety concerns. Governing body FIBA also called off four Asian World Cup qualifying games scheduled for Monday in Beirut
