CALCUTTA: Sanju Samson delivered one of the most composed innings under pressure, steering India into the T20 World Cup semifinals with a five-wicket victory over the West Indies in Kolkata.
Returning to the playing XI in the previous match after missing the three before it, Samson remained unbeaten on 97 as India chased down the target in front of a packed Eden Gardens crowd on Sunday.
The wicketkeeper-batter stood tall in a high-stakes Super Eight clash, scoring the only half-century-plus knock for India and the only individual score above 30 as the defending champions overcame the Maroons in a winner-takes-all encounter.
In the process, Samson registered the highest score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup run chase, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 82 against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022.
The co-hosts will next take on England cricket team in the second semifinal in Mumbai on Thursday, while New Zealand national cricket team face South Africa national cricket team in the first semifinal in Kolkata on Wednesday.
