DOHA : FIFA is considering alternative venues for the 2026 World Cup intercontinental play-off, with Qatar’s capital Doha reported as a leading candidate amid security concerns in Mexico.

International media reports said recent violence in parts of Mexico, including incidents in Jalisco state following the killing of a drug cartel leader, had raised safety concerns. Some countries, including Canada, have reportedly issued travel advisories, complicating security planning around the matches.

Sources indicated that FIFA could move the play-off fixtures outside Mexico to ensure the safety of teams, officials and supporters.

Doha is viewed as a strong option given its recent experience hosting major international tournaments, modern infrastructure and established security framework. Qatar staged the 2022 World Cup and has continued to host high-profile global sporting events across football and other disciplines.

The intercontinental play-off is set to feature six teams: Iraq national football team, Bolivia national football team, DR Congo national football team, Jamaica national football team, Suriname national football team and New Caledonia national football team.

FIFA has yet to make an official announcement regarding any change of venue.
