DOHA : The second edition of the Ramadan Blitz Chess Championship will begin on Thursday, organised by the Qatar Chess Association in cooperation with the Doha Youth Center, with the participation of 70 players.
The internationally rated tournament aims to promote chess in Qatar and provide a competitive platform for players during the holy month of Ramadan. Organisers said the event will feature strong participation from internationally rated players, raising the overall level of competition.
The tournament will get underway at 9:00 p.m. at the Friends of the Environment Center.
The competition will be held under the Swiss system over nine rounds, with a time control of three minutes per player plus a two-second increment per move.
According to the regulations, participation is open to all age groups of players holding a FIDE ID.
The organising committee has allocated prizes for the top five finishers, in addition to special awards for the best male and female Qatari players, and the top Qatari players in the under-16 and under-12 categories, in a bid to encourage local talent and support their development.
Hamad Al-Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Association, said staging the second edition follows the success of last year’s inaugural tournament, particularly in terms of participation levels.
He added that the association remains committed to building partnerships with various entities and institutions in the country and organising tournaments aimed at promoting chess culture within the community.
