LIMASSOL, Cyprus : The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has concluded a high-level strategic meeting with the UEFA Referees Department in Limassol, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening global officiating standards through structured cooperation and technical exchange.
The discussions led to the establishment of a formal framework for enhanced technical collaboration aimed at improving refereeing structures, governance models and performance standards across competitions at all levels.
The AFC said the partnership builds on the strong performances of its match officials at recent FIFA competitions and supports a shared objective of preparing referees for major international tournaments.
The cooperation could potentially pave the way for referees from Asia and Europe to officiate in each other’s competitions for the first time.
Officials from both confederations also exchanged views on innovation, education and operational excellence in modern officiating, holding detailed talks on competition operations, referee development pathways, talent identification frameworks and the streamlining of administrative processes.
The AFC said the dialogue laid the groundwork for sustained collaboration based on transparency, accountability and mutual learning.
