DOHA : Qatar on Tuesday marked National Sports Day, an annual initiative launched under Emiri Decree No. 80 issued on Dec. 6, 2011, which designated the second Tuesday of February each year as a nationwide day dedicated to sport and physical activity.
The decision, adopted by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, set out to embed sport in daily life and promote physical and mental well-being across society. Since its first edition, National Sports Day has aimed to highlight the role of sport in building a healthy community and supporting institutions in achieving broader social goals.
Ministries, government bodies and public sector institutions organised a range of public events, encouraging employees and the wider community to take part in sporting activities. Private sector organisations also joined the initiative, hosting simple and practical programmes to promote participation.
The day has become a platform to raise awareness of the health benefits of physical activity and to highlight ways to reduce risks linked to sedentary lifestyles, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes, organisers said.
