BRASILIA : Brazil intends to submit a bid to host the 2029 Club World Cup, Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) president Samir Xaud said on Monday following talks between President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
The announcement came after a meeting at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia that was also attended by Sports Minister Andre Fufuca and Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“We believe Brazil is capable of hosting this grand event, but it requires a lot of discussions and adjustments. However, Brazil will indeed submit its bid for 2029,” Xaud told the state news agency Agencia Brasil.
FIFA has yet to formally open the bidding process for the 2029 tournament. The first expanded edition of the Club World Cup was staged in the United States last year, with Chelsea winning the title. Spain, Morocco and Qatar are among the countries expected to submit rival bids.
Although Spain and Morocco, along with Portugal, will co-host the 2030 World Cup, the choice of hosts for the Club World Cup is made independently. This differs from past practice, when events such as the Confederations Cup were often used as test tournaments for the World Cup.
Infantino’s visit to Brazil also coincided with preparations for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which the country will host for the first time. FIFA on Sunday unveiled the official branding for the tournament, which will feature 32 teams competing between June and July.
