DOHA : Al Sadd clinched the Qatari-Emirati Super Cup title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over UAE side Shabab Al Ahli at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Friday, securing their first trophy of the season.
Shabab Al Ahli took the lead in the 29th minute through Brazilian forward Yuri Cesar, but Al Sadd responded with sustained pressure, going close before the break when Youssef Atal missed a clear chance in the 39th minute.
Al Sadd dominated possession after halftime and were rewarded in the 55th minute when Roberto Firmino converted a penalty, awarded after Akram Afif was fouled — a decision confirmed by the Swedish referee following a VAR review. Firmino calmly sent the ball to the right of goalkeeper Hamad Al Muqbali.
Akram Afif then put Al Sadd ahead in the 74th minute, collecting a pass from Pedro, controlling inside the box and firing a left-footed shot into the net. The lead lasted only four minutes, however, as young Emirati midfielder Mohammed Jumaa headed home to restore parity.
Al Sadd continued to press in the closing stages and were finally rewarded deep into stoppage time. Firmino struck the decisive goal in the fifth minute of added time to seal a deserved win and deliver Al Sadd their first silverware of the campaign.
