MELBOURNE: World number one Carlos Alcaraz has arrived in Melbourne with a clear objective: win his first Australian Open and become the youngest man in history to complete the career Grand Slam. At just 22, the Spaniard already boasts major titles at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, placing him on the brink of a rare and historic achievement.
A triumph at Melbourne Park would see Alcaraz eclipse Don Budge, who completed the career Grand Slam just days before his 23rd birthday in 1938. Alcaraz, who turns 23 on May 5, has made no secret of his priorities, admitting last November that lifting the Australian Open trophy would mean more to him than defending his French Open and U.S. Open crowns.
Success in Melbourne would also deliver his seventh Grand Slam title, making him the first male player to reach that mark before turning 23. However, Australia has so far been a challenging frontier for the world number one, with quarter-final exits in each of the past two seasons his best results. This year, Alcaraz arrives determined to turn that unfinished business into history.
