JEDDAH: Qatar will aim to make a positive start to their AFC U23 Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2026™ campaign when they face a confident United Arab Emirates side in their Group B opener tonight.

The match marks Qatar’s first appearance in the tournament, with captain Jaseem Al Sharshani expecting a difficult test despite the team coming through a solid preparation period. “Generally the first match is always the most difficult,” said the Al Ahli SC midfielder. “UAE are playing well so we are looking forward to the match.”

Qatar arrive at the tournament having already qualified for their second successive FIFA World Cup Finals, and Al Sharshani said the competition offers an important platform for the new-look squad to prove themselves as they seek to impress senior national team coach Juan Lopetegui.

The United Arab Emirates, however, head into the fixture with confidence built over an extended build-up. Head coach Marcelo Broli acknowledged the challenge posed by Qatar while backing his players. “Qatar are not easy to play with but we are confident with our players,” Broli said.

The UAE will be without forward Sultan Adil but still have Montpellier striker Junior Ndiaye and several experienced players available as they look to make an impact.
