LONDON: Wayne Rooney has thrown his support behind Liam Rosenior as the leading candidate to become Chelsea’s next manager, saying the Englishman has earned the opportunity through his work on the touchline.
Rosenior, currently in charge of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, has emerged as the front-runner to replace Enzo Maresca, who left Stamford Bridge last week. The 41-year-old previously worked as Rooney’s assistant at Derby County, a period the former Manchester United striker described as pivotal.
“Liam was so important for me,” Rooney said on the BBC’s The Wayne Rooney Show. “He was incredible in his coaching ability. I was more of the manager dealing with players and everything, but I learned a lot from him.”
Rosenior managed Hull City before taking over at Strasbourg in July 2024 and led the French club to a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1, enhancing his reputation as a progressive young coach.
“He’s done a great job as a whole,” Rooney added. “If he goes in there, he won’t disappoint.”
