LONDON: British former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a car accident in Nigeria’s Ogun State that claimed two lives, local authorities confirmed on Monday.
Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries after his vehicle collided with another car on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Ogun State Police Command said the boxer was taken to hospital for treatment, while investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said five men were involved in the incident. Two people were killed, Joshua suffered minor injuries, and two others escaped unharmed.
According to preliminary findings by the FRSC, the vehicle carrying Joshua was likely speeding and lost control while attempting to overtake, before crashing into a stationary truck parked by the roadside. The agency said excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were the primary causes of the accident, describing them as major contributors to fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.
