MELBOURNE: Australia took a firm grip on the fourth Ashes Test after a dramatic opening day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where 20 wickets tumbled on a lively pitch in front of a record crowd of 94,199.
England were bowled out for just 110 in reply to Australia’s modest first-innings total of 152, leaving the hosts with a 42-run lead by stumps. The day ended with Australia safely navigating one over to reach 4 for no loss before close.
Recalled seamer Michael Neser starred with the ball for Australia, claiming 4-45 as England’s batting crumbled in just 29.5 overs. England had earlier enjoyed success of their own after winning the toss, with Josh Tongue leading the attack by taking 5-45 to restrict Australia.
The frenetic day underlined the bowler-friendly conditions, as neither side found sustained rhythm with the bat. Australia, already leading the five-match series 3-0 following victories in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide, will look to build on their advantage on day two as they aim to close out the Ashes in emphatic fashion.
