LONDON: Newcastle United will ask the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) for clarification after Anthony Gordon was denied a penalty during Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Chelsea, manager Eddie Howe confirmed on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when Newcastle were leading 2-1, with Gordon going down in the Chelsea penalty area following a challenge from Trevoh Chalobah. Play continued, and Chelsea soon capitalised as Joao Pedro struck the equaliser to earn the visitors a point.
Howe revealed that the club has already contacted the referees’ body to understand the reasoning behind the decision. “We just want to know the thought process behind the decisions,” he said, adding that the request came from the club rather than him personally.
The Newcastle boss remained adamant in his assessment, reiterating that he believed the challenge warranted a spot-kick. “I thought, and I still do, it was a clear penalty,” Howe said, stressing that defenders should avoid putting themselves in positions that leave referees with such decisions to make.
