DOHA: President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Mohammed Hassan Jalood praised Qatar on Tuesday for its role in promoting weightlifting at international, continental and Arab levels, citing the country’s strong organisational and technical capabilities.
Jalood commended the Qatar Weightlifting Federation and its president, Mohammed Yousef Al Mana, for their continued efforts to raise the sport’s profile locally, regionally and globally.
Speaking on the sidelines of competitions in Doha, Jalood highlighted the organisation of the 10th Qatar International Cup alongside the Arab Championships for youth, junior and senior categories and the ongoing West Asian Championships, describing the hosting of three major events simultaneously as evidence of Qatar’s extensive experience and adherence to international standards.
He also praised the competition venues, accommodation and security arrangements, saying they had created an excellent environment for athletes and delegations.
More than 320 athletes from 28 countries, including 18 Arab nations, are competing in the events, which have already seen a high level of competition and new records set in several weight categories.
Mohamed Abdelmaksoud, president of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation and a member of the IWF executive committee, also lauded Qatar’s organisation, calling it exceptional.
Abdelmaksoud said Egypt’s participation with full men’s and women’s teams formed part of preparations for the World Championships, scheduled to take place in Ismailia from May 2 to 8.
