LISBON: Portugal is set to make a return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027 and 2028, with the Algarve International Circuit near Portimão confirmed as the host venue.
The Portimão circuit previously staged two Grands Prix during the Covid-19-affected seasons in 2020 and 2021 and will now rejoin the calendar as the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort bows out after its final race next year.
Known for its flowing layout and dramatic elevation changes, the 2.89-mile Algarve International Circuit is widely praised by drivers for the challenge it presents, with sweeping corners across hilly terrain making it one of the more distinctive tracks on the F1 schedule.
Lewis Hamilton won the past two events, driving for Mercedes. His 2020 victory made him the all-time record holder for grand prix wins, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s record of 91.
