PARIS: Bayern Munich winger Luis Díaz has been handed a three-match suspension by UEFA following his red card in the club’s 2-1 Champions League win over holders Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month. The Colombian, who scored both goals in Paris, was sent off just before halftime for a violent tackle on Achraf Hakimi.
PSG later confirmed that Hakimi had suffered a severe sprain to his left ankle, leaving the Moroccan defender sidelined since the incident. He even collected the African Footballer of the Year award on Wednesday while moving with the help of a scooter.
Bayern manager Vincent Kompany had initially expected Díaz to miss only the trip to Arsenal on Wednesday, but UEFA’s ruling means the winger will also be absent for home fixtures against Sporting on December 9 and Union St. Gilloise on January 21.
“My information is that he’s suspended for one game… I would be disappointed if my information is not correct,” Kompany had said earlier on Friday. However, the decision now leaves Bayern without one of their key attacking players for a crucial run of European matches.
