Doha – October 31, 2025:
The Qatar Basketball Association (QBA) was represented by an official delegation led by Mr. Saadoun Sabah Al-Kuwari, Secretary-General and National Teams Director, at the semi-annual General Assembly of the Asian Basketball Federation (FIBA Asia). The meeting took place recently at the Shangri-La Hotel in Bengaluru, India, and drew participation from prominent national federations as well as regional and international sports figures.
The gathering underscores Qatar’s growing stature as a key player in Asian basketball, highlighting the QBA’s commitment to advancing the sport through technical and administrative excellence. This aligns with the nation’s broader vision to elevate sports development and foster greater competitiveness among teams and athletes.
Key outcomes included the approval of technical amendments to qualification systems and mechanisms for Asian championships. Delegates also reviewed the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) upcoming agenda, ongoing preparations for global tournaments, and participation opportunities for member nations—initiatives designed to expand the sport’s reach and enhance player skills across regional and international levels.

The assembly was graced by the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, President of FIBA. Discussions covered the General Secretariat’s report on activities implemented during the previous period, with emphasis on human resource development, including administrators, referees, and coaches, as well as efforts to promote basketball throughout Asia.
Financial reports for 2023 and 2024 were presented, alongside updates on specialized technical workshops. These included programs for 3×3 basketball and frameworks for structuring and managing national federations, all aimed at raising administrative and technical standards across member countries.
The meeting produced a series of pivotal decisions to strengthen Asian championships, promote fair competition, expand the player base, and develop technical cadres. These outcomes reflect FIBA Asia’s dedication to supporting national federations, including the QBA, in their strategies to elevate the sport.
Mr. Al-Kuwari emphasized that the QBA’s participation in such forums demonstrates its eagerness to leverage global best practices and strengthen ties with national and continental bodies. “Qatar consistently strives to set the benchmark in tournament organization and regional basketball advancement,” he stated.
This engagement forms part of the QBA’s ongoing initiatives to bolster national teams, host local and international events, and upgrade infrastructure—efforts that build a robust youth pipeline and enhance competitiveness on both regional and global stages.
