PARIS: France defender William Saliba has declared that his team fears no one ahead of next year’s World Cup, insisting that Les Bleus are capable of overcoming reigning champions Argentina and European title holders Spain.
France, runners-up at the 2022 World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout loss to Argentina, are determined to go one step further in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Spain, who knocked France out in the semifinals of Euro 2024 before lifting the trophy, are among the favourites.
“The World Cup is eight months away. Spain and Argentina have won the last two major competitions, that’s true. But we’re not afraid of them,” Saliba said ahead of Friday’s qualifier against Azerbaijan. “I hope we qualify and get our revenge at the World Cup.”
France lead Group D with six points from two matches and host Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes before travelling to Iceland. Saliba, returning from injury and eyeing his 29th cap, is eager to make an impact as France continue their qualification campaign.
