PARIS: Luca Zidane, son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has been named in Algeria’s squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Uganda after switching his international allegiance.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, currently playing for Spanish second-division side Granada, previously represented France at youth level. FIFA approved his switch to Algeria last month, allowing him to represent the country of his grandparents, who hailed from the Kabylie region.
Zidane has been included in Algeria’s squad for their Group G fixtures against Somalia on October 9 and Uganda on October 14. Algeria currently top the group with 19 points, four clear of Uganda, and need just one win from their two remaining games to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
His call-up adds another chapter to the Zidane family’s deep footballing legacy, while giving Algeria an experienced option between the posts in a crucial stage of their campaign.
