DOHA (Qatar): The Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SCDL) held a workshop to train crews operating the World Cup stadiums on aspects of environmental sustainability, and to refine their professional and theoretical knowledge about the sustainable operation of stadiums.

Engineer Abdulaziz Al Ishaq, Director at Al Janoub Stadium, responsible for operating the venue, said, “The operations are going to the fullest to ensure that sustainability requirements are met.”

Al Ishaq explained that Al Janoub Stadium is the first stadium in the world to be equipped with a built-in air-cooling system within its basic design, to provide a model in the sustainability of sports facilities during the preparations for hosting major events.

Eng. Abdulrahman Al Muftah, sustainability specialist at the SCDL said, “This training is an important step to meet the requirements for obtaining the gold classification in the operating category. All facilities management teams participated in the training at the World Cup stadiums. We shared with them our vision and requirements for operating stadiums in an environmentally sustainable manner.”

The workshop is within the framework of the Supreme Committee’s keenness to fulfill the obligations stipulated in the sustainability strategy for the Qatar 2022 tournament during the stadium operation phase.

It also provides an opportunity for teams to transfer knowledge of environmental sustainability to those responsible for the day-to-day operation of the stadiums.
