KOLKATA: Mohammedan Sporting Club secretary Mohammad Qamaruddin has resigned from his post on Thursday.

Qamaruddin has sent his resignation to the club, and a new secretary will be elected in a few days.

According to reports, club’s technical director and former India international Dipendu Biswas has thrown his hat in the ring.

There has been growing dissatisfaction within the club recently after Qamaruddin had failed to rope in sponsors as he had promised earlier.

Contrarily, Dipendu had helped finance the team last season as a result of which most members seek a change.

“I have been involved with the club for almost 22 years,” said Qamaruddin. “I was the secretary for about three years. The younger generation wants a new face. I will help them if needed.”

If Dipendu becomes secretary, this will be the first time in the club’s history that someone from outside the minority community will take over.

Qamaruddin, who was the ground secretary, interchanged his posts with General Secretary Ghazal Uz Zafar in 2018.

Zafar, who was appointed General Secretary in 2015 by former president Sultan Ahmed, decided to step down from the post due to scheduling conflict.

During his tenure, Sporting won the 2016 Sikkim Governors Gold Cup and runners in 2016-17 Calcutta Football League.

The Black Panthers, who won the Sikkim title in 2016, came close to winning the Calcutta Football League after 38 years, but finished fourth last season.

There has not been much success for them barring winning secondary-level tournaments in recent years. The only triumph that’s worth mentioning is the Durand Cup which they won in 2013 under Nigerian coach Bola Abdulaziz. But lack of planning and investors have forced the club to hire depend on youth players.
